December Hello...

...and November.

Ahem. Sorry for my absence!

We sent our Christmas cards and added our blog address to the bottom, as we typically do. So just in case we have any new visitors, I thought I'd better stop by to say hello.

The fall was full of activity, schooling, playing, and enjoying one another. I have pictures galore, but here's one just to lure you in.

I'm working on a year-in-pictures post...so come back soon and check it out!

(Off topic for a moment: Check out the difference between my adorable husband in the picture on the blog header and the picture above. Woa. That's what a 80+ pound loss will do for you!)

As we approach Christmas, we are constantly reminded that this season is such fun for kids! Everywhere we look, the kids are amazed by the sights and sounds of Christmas. "Look, LIGHTS!" or "There's a Santa!" or "Look, it's a Jesus! And Mary! And...what was the dad's name?"

This will be our first Christmas (maybe ever??) that we are on our own. No one is visiting us and we are staying close to home. So we are planning a mini-vacation to an indoor waterpark, as well as lots of quality family time.

I'll do my best to post a few pictures before Easter. :)

So until you hear from us again, enjoy a fabulous Christmas! Read the Christmas story (the real one, from the Bible!), enjoy your family and friends, eat an extra cookie, and take lots of pictures. We love you!

Can't Argue With That

Ally was working on the vocabulary section of her spelling book the other day and coyly presented her work for my approval:

I think she understands the concept.

The First Week of School

Whew! What a week!

Here I am, on Friday, pondering the BIG events of the week. Natalie started preschool at the same school that Allyson went to as a 3 & 4-year-old. They had a staggered start, meaning the girls started on Tuesday and the boys attended on Thursday, then both will attend together this next Tuesday. So, even though she just had one day this week, she is officially a preschooler and loved every second of her preschool moments.

Allyson started her second grade year here at home. She enthusiastically started each day, asking what we would do first. It really is amazing what we can accomplish in such a small amount of time.
Of course, our little student teacher added a few distractions...

This week our classroom was the comfy sofa and pull-up coffee table, but our real classroom will be ready soon! We are transforming half of the basement playroom into our classroom. Rest assured, I will post pictures as soon as the area is camera-ready.

Our sweet 7-year-old also started piano lessons this week. Although the lesson went well, she promptly forgot what she had learned and refused to listen to my guidance. Apparently my 13 years of lessons cannot possibly help her on her VERY FIRST PIANO LESSON EVER. Ahem. We met up with her teacher this morning for another event and she reminded Ally of the correct technique.

Um yeah, I was right.

Then today, we all had our first day at Janesville's Christian Homeschoolers' Co-op. What fun! Natalie loved her class, which featured her mama as the music teacher. Allyson and the other 6-16 year olds rotated from art to music to p.e. I also taught some music to Ally's class. A local Christian school's music teacher visits us on Fridays, teaching our kids theory while another mom teaches songs for an end-of-semester program. I round out the program with a few "fun" songs. Overall, a good time was had by all!

So now, we are all ready to sleep. Any chance the little ones will sleep-in tomorrow morning?

Yeah, I didn't think so either.

Summer 2011

First of all, let me just say thanks to those of you who mentioned that you missed the blog this summer! I missed you, too.

Brace yourselves, this is gonna' be a long one. (A few of you will now click that little "x" in the upper-right-hand corner, others will freshen up their cup of coffee and dig in. For the record, I like the second group better. You're fearless. Or something like that.)

I was going to start this work of non-fiction by stating that I had dropped the ball this summer...from a tall distance. However, I'd rather just say that summer became its own entity this year and a few things just had to jump into the backseat. This blog was one of those things. As were a few other things...like cleaning my house. Ahem.

Anyway, it was one of those summers that wasn't perfect or grand; we didn't accomplish some great feat or visit someplace wildly exotic. However, we greatly enjoyed our time together, navigating the hurdles that were tossed in our direction.

Without further ado, a recap.

Our summer started (early) with a trip to the Outer Banks, NC in late May. What a tremendous start to the summer! David posted a slide show with some beach pics here, but these are two of my favorites:

In June, we hosted Dave's mom for a few days. What a blessing our kids have in their grandparents! I wasn't great with the camera this summer, and the only shot I have of the kids with their grandma was of a badminton game in the front yard. Unfortunately, my wonderful mother-in-law was facing away from me. And I figured she'd appreciate it more if I left a picture of her hind end off the blog for the time being. You're welcome, Sheila. Oh, and feel free to email any pics that you took that week...I'll add them!

Just a few days later, we had the pleasure of meeting up with my brother and his family, as well as my parents, in the thriving metropolis of Warrens, WI. The town is almost exactly halfway between Minneapolis (where they were visiting for the week) and Janesville. Conveniently, there is a lodge-style hotel and water park located in Warrens, along with, uh ... very little else. Anyway, our kids and theirs had great fun together! The last time they had seen each other was over 2 years previous. As you can see, the cousins played as if they were next-door neighbors and Christopher warmed up to Uncle Jeff in a hurry. My parents also enjoyed the opportunity to have all 5 grandchildren in the same place at once!

The day after our Warrens trip, Christopher turned two! (And triggered the ONE other summer post I have written...) Have I ever told y'all what a blessing Christopher is to our household? Even though he is fully grasping the negative skills most two-year-olds possess, he brings a whole new flair to our household with his cars, trucks, and approximately 142 balls. One of our favorite things about this boy is the amazing way that he makes friends wherever we go. Seriously. People love this kid. But not as much as we do. Happy Birthday buddy!

In early July, David's dad and step-mom visited. (See earlier comment about our kids' fabulous grandparents!) Unfortunately, I dropped the ball on the photo-taking department (see earlier comment about dropping balls...), so I am without any proof of this visit. (David and Paula: email me a picture or two!)

We got a new dryer in July...woo-hoo... (Do you sense my lack of excitement at all?) We've lived in this house for 5 years and have owned 3 clothes dryers. That's a lot of irritation, folks. Anyway, this one is showing some potential of surviving past 2011, which would be nice.

The rest of July was monopolized with my preparations for Vacation Bible School, my 7th as a director, but my first as a non-working-children's-pastor. Did that make sense? During first 6 VBS's, I was serving as a paid children's pastor, working in the church building several hours a week. This year felt MASSIVELY different because I didn't have set working hours where I focused on all the intricacies, but instead just fit in the preparations between potty-training, diaper changing, disciplining, naps, lunches, playdates, pool time, park outings, guests, and the occasional nap. But, hallelujah, a tremendous team came together to create a great event. We saw 100 children during the week, which was both exciting and panic-attack-inducing after I had only prepared for 60! (In case you were wondering, the theme was "PandaMania".)

During the week of VBS, on Tuesday to be exact, we got one of THOSE calls. You know the ones. The phone rings and you think it's a sweet call from your step-mother-in-law, wishing you a happy day or asking for a recipe or something. Instead, she was in tears, telling me her husband (Dave's dad) was being life-flighted to the nearest burn unit after a nasty run-in with a brush pile fire. Those are the afternoons that you hope to never experience again. (I'm sure he'd agree!) Anyway, David Sr. was stabilized quickly and released after only three days in the hospital. Now, several weeks later, he is healing very well and is expected to have a full recovery with minimal or no scarring at all. Praise the Lord!

The beginning of August was full of curriculum hunting & buying, as we are embarking on a new adventure in the Fox household. In just a week, I will be in the thick of homeschooling Allyson. Woa, right? I'll be sure to keep you up to date on our progress!

We made our annual trip to Little Amerricka* to get our yearly fix of rickety, not-too-stable, kind of unkempt carnival rides. I say that (partly) in jest, as the place has quite a little bit of charm and many of the rides are benign enough for even Christopher. We'll go ahead and enjoy this yearly outing for a few more years until our offspring demand the thrill rides of Great America in Chicago.

*The family that owns the small amusement park is named Merrick, thus the strange spelling of the locale. Just a little nugget for those of you keen on Wisconsin trivia.

In mid-August, I took the kids to Minneapolis to visit my parents. David doesn't have any vacation time until the new year, so he stayed home to work and complete some home projects. The kids loved their trip to the Mall of America and Como Zoo and various parks in the vicinity of my parents' home.

During our trip, my sweet aunt's husband passed away suddenly from an apparent heart attack. He was young, only 56, and had just been married to Lori for 4 years. Although the heaviness of grief was nearly overwhelming, I am so grateful that I got to hug Lori and cry with her in person before we returned home. I haven't gone a single day without hurting for her and praying God's comfort would surround her and the family. (I swear I spent nearly an hour looking for a picture of them, but I couldn't find one. I'll add one soon!)

That brings us to this point. 4 days from Ally's first day of school at Foxy Elementary. 4 days from Natalie's first day at preschool (NOT at Foxy Elementary). Ally's first upper adult tooth emerged yesterday. Literally. In the morning it wasn't there and when we said goodnight, it had emerged. Natalie is fully trained and growing more independent every day...if that's possible. Christopher is my slowest talker, but is gaining in vocabulary every day. What's funny is the order of his words; he sounds a little like Yoda.

So there you go. That was the summer in a rather large nutshell. I have lots more I could talk about, and hopefully as we get into a daily schedule I'll talk about them soon, but for now I should do a bit of cleaning.

After all, I've done very little of that kind of thing this summer.

Happy Birthday Christopher!

My sincerest apologies to my sweet baby, who's no longer a baby! I am so late in posting his birthday wishes...

Two years (and a few days) ago, this amazing little blessing entered our home and I will be forever grateful. He makes friends wherever he goes (seriously, it's amazing...you ought to see it) and his smile makes everyone around him smile in return. He has a serious addiction to balls and trucks...spotting or hearing one from a mile away. He excitement is contagious and his love of life is admirable.

From us, Christopher received a basketball hoop with which he is completely enamored. During wakeful hours, he is rarely more than 5 feet from the thing and has tried various heights, balls, and stools to make the elusive "swish" possible. Thank you to those who gave Christopher such wonderful gifts. He is blessed!

Happy Birthday to my sweet handsome boy! Mommy and Daddy love you so much!

May 2011 Photo Review

May was a great month for the Five Foxes! The weather finally began to get warm...after a few false starts. We spent a great week on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and we celebrated several birthdays.

As I was reminiscing on the month, I thought I would pull a sampling of the 300 or so photos we shot last month and share them here.

A Typical Conversation with Natalie

N: Mommy?

Me: Hmmm?

N: Can I wear my sandals to the store?

Me: Sure.

N: Thank you!

Me: You're welcome.

N: Mommy?

Me: Hmmm?

N: I don't want to wear my sandals to the store.

Me: Then don't wear your sandals to the store.

N: Okay.

Happy Birthday David!

He's now 35...officially climbing the hill. Not over it yet, but definitely approaching the top.

Happy Birthday, babe. We love you!

One Word Wednesday

"ROOOAAAAR!"

Saturday, May 14, 2011

It must be a boy thing.

David is somewhat horrified when he witnesses his only son playing with his sisters' girly toys.

Somehow I think he would have been proud if he had seen the result of the play session that Chris had with the Polly Pockets recently.

Disclaimer: No Polly Pockets were injured in the making of this post.

These Three

If it weren't for these three, and a bit of help from David, I would not celebrate this day in this way. I'd call my mom and wish I could hug her (I'll still do that!); but that's where it would end.

Instead, I get to celebrate my three treasures. Next to my husband, they are God's greatest gifts to me. Allyson, Natalie, and Christopher, I love you more than I could ever begin to explain. Thank you for making this day so special.

Allyson Mackenzie 4/08/04

Natalie Mae 1/08/08

Christopher James 6/23/09

Happy Mother's Day to our own mommies, the grandmas to our three. For a walk down memory lane, revisit last year's Mom's Day post.

Consultation Requested with the Tooth Fairy

Would someone please inform the tooth fairy that Ally has lost another one?

My question is this, at what point do the adult teeth show up?

Because if this kid loses any more without replacements we'll have to liquefy her meals and serve them with a straw.

Deserving Daddy

We're a chart family.

Or maybe I should say I am a chart person.

Currently there are at least 7 charts on our fridge (including three entirely different, but equally necessary calendars). The other four charts are Ally's Chore Chart, Nat's Potty Chart, our weekly menu, and our Countdown to the Beach Chart (by the way...we're down to the twenties!). Along with this I have at least three lists (To Do this week, To Do today, and a grocery list, if you must know).

My penchant for charts may or may not have been passed along to Ally who made her Daddy this "chart" not too long ago.

After we both commented on the rewards of a deserving Daddy, Ally looked to David and said, "I'd say, for a dad, you're pretty cool."

Ally, in case you're reading this, it's nearly Mother's Day and I might be needing a "misosh" as well.

Quick Quotes: Sunday Edition

One memorable line heard on a recent Sunday morning:

"You DON'T hit your brother with the Bible!"
(who said it or to whom it was spoken will remain a mystery...)

Yesterday I taught Kids' Church for the first time (in this church). Ally was in my class, as were several children who thought it was perfectly acceptable to play football in the moments before class began. Sorry, but I wasn't having it. Not appropriate for kids' church. I snagged the ball from one of the kids and asked them to find a chair. Ally turns to me and says,

"That's why you're a good teacher...you're MEAN."

"Tell me about your picture!"

(Alternately titled: "Child, would you please cooperate so I can take one stinkin' picture?")

"Hey Nat, show me your picture!"

"Hold still so I can take a picture of you with your picture!"

"Tell me about your picture, babe!"

"It's YOU, Mama!"
